O Legado da Devastação (#NãoaoPLdaDevastação)

Updated: Aug 14

2 days before President Lula’s partial veto of the National Congress’s so-called Devastation Bill, SOS Mata Atlântica (@sosmataatlantica) held a public action and invited (se)cura humana (@securahumana) to create and perform the intervention “THE LEGACY OF DEVASTATION” in front of the Theatro Municipal, alongside other collectives. We appeared as the “CEO of Devastation,” dragging his own “legacy of environmental exploitation.”

The performance exposed the threat in that bill: self-licensing and weakened enforcement. And the legacy would be clear: compromised water, unleashed deforestation, displacement of Indigenous peoples and traditional communities, fast-tracked works without proper review, and an open door for tragedies like Mariana and Brumadinho to repeat. Private profit, public loss.

A non-integral veto leaves dangerous loopholes. For us, that’s a setback. Brazil needs robust environmental licensing—grounded in science, with enforcement agencies, public oversight, and respect for territories—not check-the-box self-declarations. “Agility” without quality costs lives, rivers, and forests.

This video calls on society to keep pressuring the Government and Congress for policies consistent with zero deforestation and climate urgency. There is no breathable future without standing forests.
